Obituary

Martha "Marty" Ann Gallagher, 87, of Milwaukee, WI, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025 surrounded by her two daughters. Marty was an amazing mom, beloved grandmother and great grandmother. She is survived by her two daughters Roban Smith (Douglas) and Tracy Luber (Gil Southwell); brother Charles Robinson; grandchildren Drew Luber, Samantha Luber, Annie Luber, Emma Smith, and Sophie Smith; great granddaughter Madison Sakas; nephew Doug Robinson (Jaime), and niece Kimberly Lanier (Eric). She was preceded in death by her longtime partner, Tony Baranczyk, and her parents Benjamin Robinson and Erana Hopp.

Marty was born in New York City, completed high school in Rome, NY, and graduated from Hiram College, OH. She later earned her Masters in Library Science from Rutgers University in 1961. Marty worked in many library systems, including several decades as a librarian in the Brown County Library System in Green Bay.

Beyond her work, Marty was an amazing mom to her two daughters - encouraging our strength and independence. She was a voracious reader, often reading 2-3 books at a time, and amazed us all with her quests for knowledge no matter which rabbit hole she chose to go down - be it a fascinating historical figure, an interesting geographical area or a newly discovered amazing author. In addition to books, Marty was a lover of all animals including her many dogs and cats--especially her most recent "terrible terriers" Milo and Molly. Marty and Tony had a small hobby farm in Pulaski, WI, for many years--which was a favorite family retreat especially for the grandchildren.  Marty also enjoyed many summers in York Beach, Maine, with her family. She loved Maine lobster, fermented food, a tasty potato salad, and the occasional glass of red wine.

Marty was a supporter of many progressive causes. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of her favorite organizations - Habitat for Humanity or Amnesty International - or perhaps an organization that you, as her dear friend, knows you mutually support.
