Laverne Smithmier Obituary

Laverne E. Smithmier

Laverne E. Buege Smithmier was born on August 14, 1926, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the daughter of Walter and Martha Kutsch Buege. She was married to Lawrence A. Smithmier, Jr. Laverne worked in various capacities for many years at the Luther Home in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

Growing up in the Depression Era, Laverne learned early on the value of a dollar and was frugal with every penny she earned. Her loud voice and distinctive laugh set her apart from others. She was one of the toughest and most stubborn people you would ever meet, yet her deep religious faith made her the family “prayer warrior” and her unconditional love for her family was evident whenever her family was with her. Known as the “popcorn lady” while living at Luther Manor, Laverne made it a priority that everyone at Luther Manor received their popcorn on popcorn day, even while she needed the assistance of a walker to make her rounds.

On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, Laverne was called home by her Lord while a resident at Luther Manor in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. She was predeceased by her parents and her daughter, Darlyn Pfeiffer. She is survived by her grandsons, Stephen Pfeiffer and Joseph Pfeiffer and their families, along with other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Gathering will be held for Laverne on Saturday, February 22, 2020, from 12:30pm until the time of Memorial Service at 1:30m, all at Luther Manor Faith and Education Center. Entombment will follow at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, Wisconsin.
