Kathryn Greffer Obituary

Kathryn Agnes Greffer

Age 92 years.  Born to life March 24, 1928 in Berlin, Wisconsin daughter of Robert Butler and Evelyn Safford Butler.  Born to eternal life November 17, 2020 at Brookfield Rehabilitation and Specialty Care, Brookfield, Wisconsin.

This tribute was written by Kathryn's granddaughter:

The world lost an amazing horse woman and a wealth of knowledge on Tuesday.  My 92 year old grandmother.  Let me tell you, she didn't have a great start to life.  She lost her mother when she was only a few years old and had some very traumatic things happen to her after that.  One thing I do know is she turned to horses.  It makes sense to me now that's how she got through things.  I know that because that's how it has been for me.  That was her joy, it was written all over her face when she was around horses.  There never was a bad day if you were in the barn and around horses.

She had me on horses probably at 6 years old.  I was so excited to go to the barn with her every time.  I think I have permanent frost bite on toes because all she had to say was we are going to the barn and I was ready in 2 seconds flat.  Never dressed properly because all I cared about was going.  She never held me back.  I rode every horse I could that was ours and even a couple of her friends. She never showed fear so I never had fear.

She taught herself so much.  All the books, tapes, videos and magazines.  She never stopped learning.  And by all of her knowledge she taught us over the years not just family but all the lessons with students and boarders as well.

And let me tell ya.  The horses.  Yes at one point I think she had an addiction to buying horses lol.  But man she had an eye for horses.  I have to say we have been blessed with many many amazing horses over the last 40 years.  All of these horses have changed people's lives.  One thing she taught me and will always continue to do is "warm them up and walk them down".  Those who know us, know we are known to have our horses until they are very old.  I know those little words have helped.

Two of my three horses are because of you.  Both having abusive back rounds I got the opportunity to give them a better life and it's because you found them.

Where we are now, you had your part in it.  This was your dream.  You rode horses until you were 84 and I have always been proud of you for doing it.  I know you would have kept going if it wasn't for your knees.

Grandma, you are everywhere we look.  We will do our best to make you proud here at the farm.  Please watch over us and don't be playing too many jokes on us because we know how you are.  We know you did your best.  You have so much family waiting for you and I guarantee Bambi was the first one waiting at the gate for you.  We all know you probably have mints in your pockets.  I know you didn't understand covid and we are sorry they wouldn't let us see you.  It hurts so bad but we will continue to remember all the good memories with you.  We love you.
