Joan "Chick" Engel Obituary

Joan “Chick” Marie (nee Neuens) Engel

Went home to the Lord on January 23, 2022. She was born in Athens, WI on March 18, 1937 to Lester and Loretta Neuens. The family moved to Milwaukee when she was three. Joan attended Holy Redeemer grade school and it was at Messmer High School where she met her sweetheart Gene Engel. Turns out they were born two days apart and only 30 miles from each other. They were married on April 26th, 1958 and built a life together for almost 60 years until Gene passed in 2017. Joan had three siblings, the late Lester (Ruth) Neuens, the late Betty Even, and dear brother Elmer (Mary) Neuens. She will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

As a dedicated mother, she was our biggest cheerleader and constant supporter. Her religious convictions were strong which helped to raise three kids that were prone to shenanigans. Mom went on to earn the nick name “Pope Joan” from her silly kids. Not one to ever sit still, Joan enjoyed filling her time with activities like guitar lessons, working with stained glass, refinishing furniture, crocheting dish cloths and Converse-style slippers. In her kitchen, there was always something sweet baking in the oven and her apple pie was most enjoyable. She was never too shy to help out in the garage. Towing a car or getting her hands dirty, helping with auto restoration or upholstery was never too much to ask. As Model A Ford Club members for more than 30 years, she and Gene shared great moments with friends tooling around to far away places in their Model A’s. Some times it was a Mustang convertible trip. Many weekends were spent at their cabin in Townsend, WI. You would often find her enjoying the slot machines at Keshena when taking a break from work at the cottage.

Joan is lovingly remembered by her daughter Marylin (Chris) Tibbals and two sons, Michael (fiancée Peggy) Engel and Patrick (Wendy) Engel. She was a special Grandmother to Christopher Tibbals, Heather (Geoff) Campbell, Theresa (Avery) Embry, Mara Tibbals, Michael Tibbals and Angela Tibbals. Joseph (fiancée Robin) Engel and Jessica Engel. Mark Engel, Erika (Michael) Oyervides, John Engel and Alex Engel. The grandchildren lovingly called her “GJ”. In addition to her 12 grandchildren, she was Great Grandmother to Charlie, Reese and Elliott Campbell, Eden Embry and Asher Oyervides.

Dr. Joseph Schneider, as an outstanding Primary Care Physician, was truly dedicated over the years and always made time to make or take a phone call, or fit in a visit when a health concern or question came up. A special thank you to the three nurses at Froedtert Menomonee Falls Hospital, Emma, Carmelita and Deanne who lovingly prayed with our mom as she passed from this life into the arms of our Lord. Jesus I Trust In You!
