Ernestine Gibson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2024, at The Villa at Bradley Estates in Milwaukee, WI. She was 93.
Born Ernestine Elizabeth Campbell in Helena, Arkansas on March 10, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Excell and Emma (née Williams) Campbell, who hailed from Duck Hill, Mississippi.
She is predeceased by a son, Thomas (Tony) Anthony Gibson, ex-husband Jerome N. Gibson, sisters, Thelma Hudson, Edna Swanson, Ruth (Ruby) Carey, and Mary (Everett) Tunson, five brothers, Cullen (Susie) Campbell, Excell (Vivian) Campbell, Clarence (Juanita) Campbell, Floyd Campbell, William Campbell and cousin, Wesley (Clara) Berryhill, who the Campbells raised from infancy following the childbirth death of his mother and the elder Excell’s sister, T. Campbell Berryhill.
She is survived by her eldest son, Gregory Gibson, daughter Sharon (Michael Morgan) Gibson, five grandchildren, an abundance of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Ernestine was born in Helena, Arkansas. She later moved North with the family to Milwaukee. Following high school, Ernestine worked at Master Lock in Milwaukee, and later at Children’s Hospital of Milwaukee until her retirement in the 1970s.
Ernestine loved cooking and traveling. She raised parakeets and was a member of the Wisconsin chapter of the American Budgerigar Society. She also was active in the civil rights movement of the ‘50s and ‘60s.
Arrangements provided by Jelacic Funeral Home, 5639 W. Hampton Ave. The viewing will be held there on Monday, March 18 at 11 a.m. and followed by services at 12 Noon.
