Alice (Devine) Stollenwerk

Alice Stollenwerk died on July 24, 2026.

A funeral for Alice will take place on August 14 at Saint Ann's Chapel at the Milwaukee Catholic Home, with visitation from 9:00am–10:30am and service at 10:30am.

Alice was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim. She is survived by her children: Rob (Tammy), Sara (Chris), Amy (John), Paul (Deb), Ann (Eric), Matt (Jodi), Jennie (the late Ernie), and Carrie; her sixteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, John; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Alice was born in Milwaukee in 1934, and Milwaukee never really let go of her — nor she of it. She attended Holy Angels High School, then headed east to earn her BSN from Georgetown University, before coming right back home to work for the Visiting Nurse Association of Milwaukee. Decades later, after raising eight children, she went right back to VNA again, this time serving the central city — because apparently once wasn't enough. Alice never tired of that work, and she never tired of talking about it either: ask anyone in her orbit, and they'll tell you she had a VNA story for every single day of the week.

Alice met Jim on a blind date in 1957, married him in 1959, and spent the next several decades proving that raising eight kids and still showing up for everyone else was entirely possible if you simply refused to sit still. And Alice refused to sit still. She poured her faith into parish life at Gesu in Milwaukee and Stella Maris in Fish Creek. She poured her love of the arts into the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra League, the Door County Art School board, and her post as a docent at the Hardy Gallery in Ephraim. She poured her conviction into Restorative Justice work through Marquette University and prison ministry in Milwaukee and Green Bay. And when Door County needed a Health and Wellness Committee, Alice helped found it — then practically threw a parade when the county hired its first parish nurse.

If there was a good cause within reach, Alice was already volunteering for it before anyone thought to ask.

Ephraim and Elm Grove were her two homes, and both had an open-door policy: family and friends welcome, any hour, no notice required. When she and Jim eventually moved back to Milwaukee to be closer to family, they settled at the Residence at the Milwaukee Catholic Home — and Alice, being Alice, promptly became one of its most beloved fixtures. She and Cornelius, her favorite cat, made their nightly rounds together, charming residents and staff alike, right up to the end. Her wit was sharp, her wisdom was hard-won, and both will be deeply missed by everyone lucky enough to have known her.

Alice's final resting place will be in Ephraim, alongside Jim. A private graveside service will be held there.
